Holi - A story of colours, laughter, and togetherness
The very first Holi I can remember was from when I was barely 5 year old and I vaguely recall the moment. It wasn’t in a big crowd; It was simply a ritual shared with a neighbour’s child who didn’t even speak the same language as me. I distinctly remember the initial discomfort when the cold water hit my skin, but then, that day I also learned my first few sentences of Kannada, the language the other family spoke. Holi that day simply broke the language barriers and we enjoyed heartily, the inability to communicate effectively through language couldn’t stop us either from having a hearty moment!
A Celebration Beyond Seasons
Traditionally, Holi is played with colours and water to beat the summer heat in India, it symbolises the victory of good over evil and also marks the end of winter season. But here in the UK, we celebrate wholeheartedly even with the chilly weather, because Holi is not just about the season, weather and timing —it’s the spirit; and who doesn’t like throwing colours, especially at others? :). It’s about coming together, sharing laughter, and creating memories that last beyond the colours that wash away.
Expressions of Holi Through My Lens
As a photographer, what I loved most about capturing Holi was the raw & unfiltered emotions, music & dance, and the friendships formed in the middle of all the vibrant chaos.
Here are some of my favourite portraits from the event—faces painted with colour, eyes gleaming with joy, bursts of laughter, childlike joy of throwing colours, and the festival of Holi brought to life in all its glory.
Colours That Linger
By the end of the day, the colours fade, faces, once unrecognizable under layers of pink, blue, and yellow, reveal tired but satisfied smiles. For me, Holi is more than just a festival—it’s an experience, a feeling, and a reminder of the beauty of clebration and togetherness.
